Sustainable Development

Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not
every man’s greed.

A Couple in 2030

Wife : Honey, have you paid our bills from environmental agency, it is
about our carbon emission.

Husband : No, Why is the government thinking about all these petty
things. We may live for another 40 years, so how does it matter to me?

Wife : Yes, you are correct but shouldn’t we pay for the pollution we
create? What about our future generation? They should get all the
things which we have today. Even though imaginary, the above

conversation reflects the danger we would likely face. The earth has

existed for billions of years and it has been preserved by our ancestors
for centuries. So it is our duty to save it for our future generation.
Thus “Sustainable Development” is the need of the hour. The concept of

Sustainable Development was first officially put forward by the

Brundtland Commission in its report “Our Common Future” which defined
it as:
‘Development that meets the need of the present generation without

compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own

needs’.
