About
the Theme

Aristotle once said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” In the pursuit of life, our goals and aspirations had occupied all the free space in our mind and was subsuming us, rightfully so. They say a pause or break is necessary for us to re-evaluate and look at our current standing. Be it – career, profession, habits, relationships, milestones, everything. To better ourselves for what lies ahead of us. Sometimes, radical changes are the need of the hour. Otherwise, we can get away with a minor course correction. Though hard to understand, our ability as humans to learn from why we fail is what sets us apart as a race. ‘Phoenix’ is the emblem of one such thing. It symbolizes the resurrection of a new ray of hope, spirit, effort and courage. It supports how it is for our benefit to adapt to external change and not be crushed by its magnitude. As you courageously embrace the transformational process, a new, wiser and stronger YOU will be born.

The annual college magazine 'Catalyst' is a product of the innovative minds of 4 people. A place for the college to rhapsodize itself has now sustained the test of time and enters its 6th year of production. 2016 saw the college magazine in it's pilot form with the creators anticipating nothing but the legacy to be continued. It came as a pleasant surprise when this half-baked product internalized the euphoria built around it.

2017 saw us adapt to the theme 'Make in India' to promote future entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. Various events that were conducted engulfed a good participation from the students. Carrying the fire forward, the next year witnessed us incorporating the theme 'WHY?' resonating with the feel and feedback of the college at that time. This being a very homegrown and organic theme, the feedback received was phenomenal. With 'I to We', the magazine tried out highlighting a bigger purpose of the human life.

This year, with the onset of the pandemic, everything shutting down and the world coming to a halt, we have emphasized on the ability to being reborn, to rise from the ashes and beating the odds by being tenacious, innovative, adaptive and creative.

Principal's Desk

I sincerely appreciate the team Catalyst for publishing the eagerly awaited magazine for this year too in spite of the prevailing pandemic. Hearty congratulations to the team Catalyst!!
This year has been a year of disruptions testing the patience, tenacity, tolerance and perseverance of human race with challenges posed at personal, professional, social and national level. The disruption has set a new normal at both home and outside.
It was no different for the institution as well. With the sudden lockdown from March 2020, the institution switched on to online mode of teaching-learning process with the available resources and know-how. The teachers tried their level best to reach each and every student with various available communication means. The online mode of teaching was quite satisfactory for theory courses; but it was really challenging for practical courses, especially in core streams.  However the teachers tried to impart the practical knowledge through virtual labs and videos to the extent possible. The bigger challenge was the evaluation as it was limited to only MCQ type examinations. It was difficult to measure the outcome based on MCQ tests.
With no signs of receding of the pandemic, the odd semester of 2020-21 was started online with well planned academic calendar. The teachers resorted to NPTEL and other MOOCs as additional support for better understanding. They tried to make it a teaching-learning process rather that only a teaching process. As the evaluation using MCQ tests was not an appropriate measure of outcomes, the institute could find an online solution for the descriptive examination and successfully conducted the end-semester examination of odd-semester of 2020-21.
One of the major disruptions was the absence of on campus students’ activities. The campus was lull without the all energetic buzzing students. We really missed you dear students! With the Covid care centers running in the hostels the ecosystem of the campus was completely disturbed. However it was a matter of satisfaction that the campus was useful to the society in these difficult times. In spite of these limitations, the faculty advisors tried to conduct many activities online with support from student representatives.
With all these disruptions, we did find some oases in the form of dedication to social service, better communication networks, care for each other and all the urge to defeat the pandemic. Definitely we have learned a lesson of life due to this pandemic.
Let us hope that the pandemic will recede at the earliest possible time and the campus will abuzz with the young faces again. I hope the catalyst will also include some pandemic experiences as a part of their publication. Kudos to team Catalyst again!!

The past year has been a rather difficult one. Of the many lessons it taught, one that stands out for me, is that when we learn how to become resilient, we can learn how to embrace the beautifully broad spectrum of human experience. In the past few months, we did, indeed, accept and embrace a rather new normal in our life, without much choice, yet willingly. Nonetheless, all of us managed to cope with the constantly changing times.

That is exactly where education comes in handy; to help us cope with change. Education is not simply limited to books. The purpose of education is to enable people to add value to human lives. Now, more than ever, our students are going to have to step out of their comfort zones, discover themselves, and contribute to the society. What is important here, is to discover oneself. It is only through self-discovery that one can have a fulfilling career. With that in mind, we have established the Ankur Incubation Centre two years back, where students can come forward with ideas and get the requisite guidance in that regard. I would also encourage students to come forward and take initiative if they have any ideas which they feel are worth exploring.

Since the past 61 years, our institution has been in ‘Pursuit of Technical Excellence’, and to say that we have lived up to it, shall be no overstatement. Not only have our students made us proud on the technical front by winning accolades at national level technical competitions like SAE BAJA, Robocon, or TechFest (IIT-B), but our cultural teams have also rocked Firodiya and Purshottam Karandak. Our focus, as an institution, has been on holistic development of an individual, and these accomplishments prove just that. Along with our dear students, the teaching and non-teaching staff have a lion’s share in these achievements.

However, progress is a continuous process. There is still significant scope for improvement. Better academics with relevant and constant revamping of the curriculum, better placement assistance for students, proper exposure to budding talent, stronger alumni network, smoother administration, increased industry-institute interaction, and availability of state-of-the-art infrastructure are some of the key areas of focus.

Also, I wish to congratulate Team Catalyst on their 6th edition of their magazine! I particularly appreciate how they provide a platform for our students to express themselves through art.

I would like to conclude with a few lines by Tennyson, which encapsulate the human spirit to endure through even the most difficult of times:

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven,
That which we are, we are,
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Editorial

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall. - Confucius.

The past year was one filled with unprecedented challenges, and hence opportunities in disguise. Opportunities to pause, reflect, unlearn, and relearn many things, new and old. Despite the uncertain nature of eventualities, all of us endured, and managed to overcome our odds. Keeping that in mind, team Catalyst came up with this year's theme 'Phoenix', a symbol of hope, resilience, and resurrection. A symbol of hope for us to hold on to and never lose faith. A symbol of resilience, to keep persevering in the worst face of adversity. And a symbol of resurrection, to rise, however hard the fall.

This year's magazine is focused on looking at things in a new way, about constantly learning, and outgrowing ourselves. All write-ups, designs, and interviews have been planned in a manner coherent with the theme of the magazine. Right since its inception, Catalyst has provided a platform for students to express themselves, and get themselves heard. A few rather interesting sections many students look forward to are the 'Expressions' (where articles/poems/drawings/sketches taken from students are displayed) and the Interview sections. It is really fascinating to watch artworks from our very own students. The team interviewed Tanay Manjrekar, the Indian youngster who happens to be among the first people to ride the Virgin Hyperloop. His experience, both in his learning and professional years, shall surely add value to our readers' lives.

Owing to the pandemic, this year, too, the magazine is being published in an online manner. Thus the team has tried to make the magazine a little interactive. I congratulate the team for this creative initiative. In conclusion, I wish you, the reader, a fruitful reading experience! Cheers to Team Catalyst for the 6th edition!
